An elderly couple were taken to hospital after their mobile home overturned on the M6 causing long delays.
Police have appealed for witnesses following the accident on the northbound carriageway between the two slip roads at Junction 28, near Leyland, at around 1.40pm today.
A mobile home towing a Renault Meganne was travelling in the middle lane and a black Honda Civic was travelling in lane three.
Police said both vehicles came close to colliding and took evasive action to try and avoid a collision but were unsuccessful.
The mobile home overturned, the Renault Meganne collided with the central reservation barrier and the Honda Civic received minimal damage.
The occupants of the motorhome, an elderly married couple, were taken to Royal Preston Hospital.
Officers said the man was taken by land ambulance with head injuries and the woman was airlifted to hospital. Her injuries are not known at this stage.
The northbound carriageway remains closed and it is hoped lanes two and three will open at around 5pm.
The southbound carriageway was closed temporarily to allow one of two air ambulances to land with the other landing on the northbound road.
Accident investigation officers attended the scene to carry out an examination of the road.
Sgt Dave Hogarth, from the Road Policing Unit, said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who witnessed the collision to come forward and contact the police.
“Traffic is extremely busy in the area and diversions are in place. I would urge people to avoid the area if possible.”

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “The M6 northbound is currently closed within Junction 28 due to a serious incident.
“Traffic is being directed to exit the carriageway at Junction 28, to transit around the island and to then re-join the northbound carriageway on the far side of the same junction. There are currently long delays due to this closure.
“The M6 southbound is also currently closed from Junction 29 to 28 as a result of this incident.
“A signed diversion is in operation for southbound traffic, which should exit at Junction 29 and follow the “black circle” symbol to join the A6 westbound.
“Traffic should then take the A49 southbound to the junction with the B5256 where it should join the B5256 westbound and rejoin the M6 at Junction 28.”
