After the accident record the names of the other drivers involved, their dates of birth and their contact information. Also record a description of the other cars that were involved in the accident, the license plate numbers, driver's license numbers of the drivers, and insurance information including the policy number and company. When exchanging information, do not admit that the accident or any part of the accident was your fault. You will also want to gather statements from anyone who saw what happened. If possible, have them stay and talk with the police, but if they have to leave, get their contact information so they can make a statement later.
Record Your Point of View
As soon as possible after the accident, write your statement of what happened while it is fresh in your mind. In addition to narrating the event, draw a diagram of accident to show what happened. Be sure to include street signs, road markings or skid marks from the accident, and time of day and weather conditions. If you wait too long to record what you remember, you may forget important points. However, do not include any admission of fault because what you say to the police or to the other driver(s) can be used against you in court. If possible, take photographs of the accident scene and any injuries that occurred. The only form you should sign after an accident is a ticket from the police. Signing a ticket only means you will appear in court or choose not to contest the ticket. It is not an admission of guilt and if you do not sign you could be arrested.
